Many happy returns, Victoria Beckham!

The Spice Girl-turned-illustrious fashion designer turns 40 today (April 17), so to celebrate the milestone we take a look at the star's style evolution below:

Victoria, aka Posh Spice, wears her trademark little black dress - which has since gone on to be emulated by other stars dressing up as the former Spice Girl - during a photo shoot with the girl band in 1997.

Company Associate Editor-Fashion Oonagh Brennan said: Compared to some of the fash horrors that are to come, this look is surprisingly okay. It's more like shapewear than a dress, and the shoes are dreadful, but with rope sandals and big sunnies, she might just get away with this now.

Then the star went solo and through a bandana 'badass' phase, completing the look with skin-tight leather trousers and a belt decorated with gold bullets as she performed at Radio One's One Big Sunday gig in 2001.

Company says: Shocker alert! Did this entire look, including the extensions, come from Poundland? Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Let us not forget the time when Victoria and David Beckham dressed in similar attire, pictured here in matching leather numbers at the opening of the Versace Couture Jeans boutique. They did it again at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles.

Company says: V & DB channelling Mr and Mrs Smith. This is no Kooples campaign - they look like assassins in cheap leather.

Company adds: Double dodgy. They look like they're modelling for a very bad wedding brand. Too much bling, too much satin.

Who could forget that colourful plunging Cavalli number, which an extremely bronzed Victoria Beckham wore to Swarovski Fashion Rocks for the Prince's Trust 2005?

Company says: Dress + orange tan + bling = Euro tackorama.

Victoria Beckham is Queen WAG in an 'England Rocks' red vest , minuscule white hotpants and a matching Hermes handbag as she supports David Beckham during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Nuremberg, Germany.

Company says: As WAGgy looks go, this is a good one. Very LA glam - it's just the bad striped highlights letting this look down. A sleek glossy pony would make it feel fresh and sporty.

Victoria Beckham works the no trousers look with flesh-coloured tights at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in the capital. Beckham braved it in just a black bodice, cropped white jacket and Madonna-style black fingerless gloves.

Company says: The street hooker era... not even high class. It's all way too small and way too tight, like she started getting dressed and then couldn't be bothered to finish. And American tan tights… the biggest fash faux-pas of all time. Shame on you, VB.

Beckham then tones down her look in a white shirt, black waistcoat and pair of skinny jeans as she promotes dVb Denim in Madrid.

We love this picture mainly due to the over-the-top, grandiose look of this outfit (and matching pose), but also because it was at former couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes's over-the-top wedding at the 15th century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy.

Company says: Errrr... here we have a case of serious over-accessorising! Ditch the ludicrous hat, bow and diamanté detailing and she's got herself a slick, stylish outfit. Less is more, Victoria, less is more.

Victoria's style improves with this bright pink Roland Mouret Moon dress during her first public appearance with husband David as he's announced as a Los Angeles Galaxy player in July 2007.

Company says: Hate the raspberry sugary pink of this dress, but at least she is starting to cover herself up. Bad shoes, though - the black points kill it.

Victoria Beckham looks chic in one of her own creations at the Vanity Fair Oscar after-party in Hollywood back in 2010.

Company says: IN LOVE with the dress.

VB wears a simple halter-neck black dress from her collection as she accepts Designer Brand of the Year at the annual British Fashion Awards in 2011.

Company says: Finally V realises you don't have to be half-naked to look sexy.

Victoria Beckham is accepted into the fashion fold by US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at a fashion event during New York Fashion Week in 2012. And both of them are showing a hint of a smile!

Company says: Well, if Anna W is happy to stand by her, then she must look good. Love the simple tailoring of this dress, and the lower heel keeps it from looking too glam.

Victoria Beckham looked effortlessly stylish in a military-style jacket with an understated white shirt from her own collection and black Isabel Marant trousers as she attends the press night for Viva Forever in London.

Company says: My favourite look of all time. Boyish and slick, this look is expensive, relaxed and unconsidered. VB, you are finally a style icon for all the right reasons.
