The role: Software Engineer

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how millions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our ambitions reach far beyond just Search. Our products need to handle information at the the scale of the web. We're looking for ideas from every area of computer science, including information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, and user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you work on a small team and can switch teams and projects as our fast-paced business grows and evolves. We need our engineers to be versatile and passionate to tackle new problems as we continue to push technology forward.

With your technical expertise you manage individual projects priorities, deadlines and deliverables. You design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Write client and server-side code for web-based applications, create robust high-volume production applications, and develop prototypes quickly. An understanding of, and practical experience with, Java server application and HTML5 development is an asset.
  • Build platforms, systems and networking infrastructure using your strong background in distributed systems, OS/kernel, network system design, and large scale storage systems.
  • Invent, analyze, and optimize new algorithms or data structures that are provably better than the alternatives.
  • Design, implement, and analyze complex prediction algorithms with real impact on Google’s advertising business.

Minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree (In lieu of degree, relevant skills or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with at least one of Java, JavaScript, or C/C++.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD degree.
  • Experience with leading projects.
  • Specialist domains: UI development with AJAX and similar technologies, client application development for Windows/Mac (Chrome, Toolbar, etc.)
  • Software engineer with exceptional programming skills, ability to learn fast.
  • Python and Linux scripting skills are desirable.
